ComTALK International and its allies congratulate Ms. Beverly King on her achievement of being conferred with the second highest National Award, the Chaconia Medal Gold. Ms King was conferred with this award on March 9, 2022 by Her Excellency, the President Paula Mae Weekes, ORTT. Ms. King has toiled sacrificially for 30 years providing psychosocial support for persons infected and affected with HIV. She has nursed persons with HIV, conducted workshops to educate persons about how to prevent STIs and manage their sexuality, trained peer counsellors, conducted Support Groups at South AIDS SUPPORT and ComTALK International, as well as work closely with medical staff and international organizations in the field Many times she has gone beyond expectations by assisting PLHIVs with their financial, housing and medical needs and material resources, and provided an empathetic ear to their challenges. Ms King has also contributed to research in HIV in Trinidad and in the wider Caribbean region and is one of the key persons implementing the Strengthening Psychosocial and Community Resilience Programme in rural communities in East Trinidad. This is a well-deserved award and we proudly stand behind her as the accolades keep pouring in from local, regional and international circles and from persons and their relatives whose lives she has touched

HIV, Gender-based Violence, Psychosocial Issues and Resilience Workshop 1-2 December 2021, 4.00-7.00pm On December 1 and 2 ComTALK International hosted our third virtual workshop entitled ‘HIV, Gender-based violence, Psychosocial Issues and Resilience’. The Objectives of this workshop were: 1. To promote awareness about Gender-based Violence and HIV 2. To empower persons to adopt protective behaviours 3. To provide support for survivor and victims of GBV and those at risk of GBV 4. To identify attitudes, norms and structures that promote or facilitate GBV
Strengthening Personal and Community Resilience Workshop Highlights On 17-18 November 2021, ComTALK International in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy Port of Spain and Caribbean Women’s Association held its second virtual workshop under its Project entitled – ‘ Strengthening Psycho-Social and Community Resilience in Rural Areas in East Trinidad’. The workshop which followed from the first workshop which focused on Life Skills was entitled: ‘Strengthening Personal and Community Resilience’. The objectives of the workshop were to : 1. Equip participants with tools to enable them to become more resilient 2. Foster community connectedness and 3. Promote awareness about services and programmes available from publc and private sectors to enhance community and personal resilience
On October 20th - 21st, ComTALK International in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy and the Caribbean Women's Health Association hosted, "My Tool Box For Life: A Virtual Life Skills Workshop". Designed especially for the residents, community groups & organizations of Arima, Valencia, Sangre Grande, Toco, Blanchisseuse and environs. This workshop forms part of several activities being implemented as components of the programme ‘Strengthening Psycho-Social and Community Resilience in Rural Areas in East Trinidad’. In welcoming the participants, the Project Coordinator, Dr Beverly Andrews highlighted the objectives of the programme which are to: 1. Reduce knowledge gaps in public health emergencies and challenges such as COVID 19, HIV and AIDS, Gender-based violence and disaster preparedness, legal literacy 2. Increase individual and community resilience through capacity building 3. Strengthen community social networks and social capital by creating an online platform for promoting disaster preparedness, COVID 19 and HIV and AIDS information and providing psychosocial support through expert counselling, discussion forums, peer support 4. Increase self and community sustainability by building and supporting entrepreneurial skills development and sustainable livelihoods of rural and vulnerable communities. With powerful and interactive presentations from professionals in their respective fields, attendees on Day 1 were exposed to interpersonal and communicative life skills, conflict resolution, negotiation skills and their level of assertiveness. Day 2 challenged participants to explore self-management skills such as coping with emotions and emotional intelligence, their awareness of self, how to cope with stress and anxiety and how to enhance their thinking skills critically and creatively. We also looked at ways to improve problem solving and decision-making skills. The workshop saw an online attendance of over 60 persons daily and featured interactive sessions with polls, quizzes and prizes. There was representation from several community groups, faith-based organisations, ministries and other organisations. We congratulate our prize winners on Day 1 and Day 2. We look forward to the positive impact of these enriching sessions in their individual lives, families, community groups and organizations. We also wish to express gratitude to all our dedicated facilitators who shared at each of the sessions and Ms Beverly King, ComTALK Founder. Our next life changing workshop will focus on Strengthening Personal and Community Resilience and is carded for November 17-18th 2021.
On Wednesday 13th October 2021, ComTALK International in collaboration with The Department of State, U.S. Embassy Port of Spain and Caribbean Women's Health Association virtually launched the Programme "Strengthening Psycho-Social and Community Resilience in Rural Areas in East Trinidad ” which aims to increase capacity for sustained livelihoods, empower and enable more resilient individuals and communities, and facilitate sustainable links and networks with our U.S. Collaborating Partner and local organizations. This programme includes several activities including Capacity Building Workshops destined to train, reach, and empower persons in the rural communities of Arima, Toco/Sangre Grande, and Valencia and environs, provision of psycho-social support, development of community resources, etc. We thank all our Partners, Community Leaders, Community Groups, government and non-government Ministries and agencies, faith-based organizations, regional corporations, representatives of MP offices, residents of the communities and all persons for attending the launch event. We thank especially the U.S. Embassy and the Caribbean Women’s Health Association for partnering with us in the programme. We look forward to all of your continued support and the great work that lies ahead.
